Why I go...to get a fresh breath of Al-Anon recovery from folks who are dedicated to making sure Al-Anon and Alateen thrive in our wonderful state.

Why I attend La. State Assembly
I attend because when I got to the program I was told, find someone who has what you want and do what they do. Well "they" attended state assembly, traveling together made for a great extended in-depth meeting, gave me the opportunity to watch recovery in action in real time, real life situations, and gave me the chance to be "loved" instead of being controlled or manipulated. I have been coming ever since, working my way up the chain of learning opportunities.
Thank you state Al-Anon members for giving me a chance to help myself and others find recovery and teaching me not to leave before the miracle happened in my world.

Why I Go to Area Assembly
I keep going to Area Assembly because each time I go, I learn more about Al-Anon -- its history, traditions, steps, literature, international activities and services – more about why it is so special and how it helps people in need worldwide. Each time I go to Area Assembly, I get recharged with excitement about what Al-Anon is and does, and how glad I am to be a part of it and to be of service. I also like spending time with my friends in recovery from all over the state – where else could I find them all in one place!

I go to Assembly because as a group representative, I get great satisfaction from giving something back to my group which has helped me so much.
I go to Assembly because I learn so much more about the program, especially the Concepts which help me in my personal growth.
I go to Assembly because it gives me the opportunity to be part of a larger community, sharing time with old friends and making new ones outside of my own area.

Why I go to Assembly:
I go to assembly first to share with the fellowship my part in service and see my friends I have made over the years. The work we do and service we perform cannot be measured. We bring the message, news, and business of the world wide fellowship from WSO ( world service office ) to our local groups. I especially enjoyed serving on the State Convention Committee. I made new friends and was able to see the message brought to Al-Anons and AAs across the state under one roof. The rewards at assembly grow each time I meet someone new giving themselves to service and the love of the fellowship embracing them. What we cannot do by ourselves we can do together and Assembly is a great place where that happens.

There are many reasons I attend Assembly. One important reason is to hear the AA and Al-Anon speakers on Saturday evening. Very early on in my home group, I was encouraged to listen to both AA and Al-Anon speakers whenever possible. My continuing recovery has included speakers. I take that recovery back to my family, my home group, my sponsees, and the other AFG groups I attend. I am very grateful that here in Louisiana AA and Al-Anon continue to choose to hold Area Assembly together

Watching and helping others grow in Al-Anon service at the Assembly strengthens my faith in our Legacies. Without such a place to learn and practice our Legacies, I would be a boat without a sail.

I attend assembly because I have a desire to know that our program is not diluted and that seeing how our groups keep us together by being voting members at assembly. An added touch is the workshops and speakers and cooperating with the AA program can work. An added gift is the fun, and the friendship of other Louisiana Al-Anon members.. I am in Al-Anon because i need to know that our fellowship is still as it was handed to us from our co founders.

Why do I go to Area Assembly?
Because I’m supposed to. I’m supposed to be grateful for getting my life back. I’m supposed to listen to my sponsor. I’m supposed to give something back. I’m supposed to do some service work. I’m supposed to keep coming back. It is the last thing they ever tell me whenever I go to the meetings.
With those ideas in mind, I raised my hand when the group asked for someone interested in becoming a Group Representative for The City Park Meeting.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. I’ve always like the people that I have met in AlAnon so I felt comfortable with that aspect of it. I’ve never liked committee work. Consequently, I rarely do a good job of it. AlAnon is a fairly well worked out organization. I couldn’t imagine what function the assembly served.
I spent my first assembly watching and learning. I met some nice people and voted on some boring business items about money. I didn’t see that we got much done. But I felt good about myself and AlAnon.
Like I always say, “If it works, do it again”.
As each assembly rolled around, I was eager to go back to see the friends that I had made. I still didn’t know what the purpose was. I had the same response to my fist AlAnon meetings. I felt right in my spiritual world and I could not explain it. I kept coming back.
The committee work appears to be focused on getting the message out to people in our areas. The business meeting seems to be focused on providing support and guidance for those efforts. That is Twelfth Step Work!
One step at a time, First things first and Think.
I accepted the appointment to the Web Mistress so I wouldn’t have to work on a committee. It didn’t work out that way. First I had to have several meetings and continued contact with the former Web Master to learn the process. Then I am in contact with members all over the state when they send meeting changes to me. The officers of the Area Assembly write to me and send me La Treasure Chest and the minutes. We are teaching each other computer skills to keep this website going. And I am honor bound to adhere to AlAnon principles. I need to get feedback from our trusted leaders whenever I get a great idea about something new to put on the page.
All of these contacts for the website help to keep me focused on the program and my spiritual growth. Who knows what will come next?

Why? Initially, I went because I was a Group Rep. I went back because I liked being around people who have years of recovery. I also like to give back some of what I have received. Now, I am able to introduce Newcomers to Assembly and share my experience strength and hope. It's like a family reunion everytime. The only thing missing is the potluck meals and program and recovery are food for my soul. Jo D., Covington
I became GR to fulfill a commitment to myself to continue in Al-Anon so I would get mentally, physically, and spiritually healthy. At Assembly I received gifts such as fellowship, friends and a commitment to learn how to carry this message to others. Along the way I got so much more about “How Al-Anon Works” .
